Definitions:

FORECASTING - 1 a : to calculate or predict (some future event or condition) usually as a result of study and analysis of available pertinent data; especially : to predict (weather conditions) on the basis of correlated meteorological observations b : to indicate as likely to occur
2 : to serve as a forecast of : PRESAGE

If we lived in a solar system that had no other planets and Earth had no Moon, there would be no aspects to affect us. In the absence of Mars, we'd have nothing to trigger anger, exploration, or activity. With no Saturn, there would be no stress, but also no maturation, nor organization, and most important, no sense of structure. Humanity, with all of its ramifications, tends to develop according to the influence the planets signify. The instructions contained in this article should aid you in finding the influences.

Every day, the movement of the planets creates new sets of aspect configurations. Historically, astrologers have seen these configurations as affecting our daily lives.

Astrologers have many ways of preparing a forecast. The technique used in this article is not brand new, it is as old as astrology itself. Excellent results can be had by following the instructions.

What Can We Predict?
Personal events, world events and, in the main, weather, as you will see elsewhere on this site. The focus in this article is on forecasting personal events, but once you master the techniques, you'll be able to easily apply them to mundane events; all that is required is a basic knowledge of astrology.

What Do We Use?

  • A Natal Chart
  • A Lunation Chart
  • Aspects and Orbs
  • The Transiting Moon As The Trigger
  • Building The Forecast Story

LUNATION - a phase of the Moon - new, quarter or full Moon

Natal Chart

In forecasting for an individual, a well-timed natal chart is imperative. If you find that your forecasts are not working out, chances are the chart you are working with has an error in the birth time and may require some rectification.

[SAMPLE NATAL CHART]

Pay attention to natal aspects as they indicate areas of life that already have more focus, stress, or benefit. The aspects from the lunation chart to the natal chart will only serve to enhance what is already present in the natal chart.
Lunation Charts

The Moon orbits the Earth, making one revolution every 29.530589 days. This orbit is known as the synodic month, spanning the period from one new moon to the next. Each synodic month is divided into quarters which we are familiar with as the new moon, first quarter moon, full moon, and last quarter moon. Each of these quarters last approximately seven days.

By drawing up a chart for each of these lunations, examining the aspects between the planets within the lunation chart and between the lunation chart and the natal chart, we will be able to get an idea about what sort of events we will experience during the time span each of these lunations is in effect.

Each lunation is effective for a specific amount of time:

  • The new moon for four weeks.
  • The full moon for two weeks.
  • The quarter moons (first and last) for one week.
Each of the time periods is a clue to how strongly the aspects will affect the individual. The new moon effects last four weeks; the effects are diluted and will be experienced at the same time each week for four weeks. When an aspect is triggered on a Tuesday, for example, you can expect to see similar events every Tuesday for the four-week length of that new moon. The full moon has a two-week influence with the intensity of the effect a bit more concentrated. The quarter moons lasting a week can be expected to exhibit the greatest strength.

Casting the charts for lunations is relatively easy using astrology software. Check the manual for instructions.

Create a bi-wheel chart with your natal chart as the inner wheel and the lunation chart as the outer wheel. Plotting the transiting lunation planets around your natal chart by hand is another method.

[SAMPLE BI-WHEEL CHART]

Once familiar with these techniques it can be handy to print out a page with just the four lunations (starting with the New Moon) as separate wheels. I have a three-ring binder where I can keep these pages neatly organized and make notes about the outcome of the various aspects.

ASPECT - 1 a : the position of planets or stars with respect to one another held by astrologers to influence human affairs; also : the apparent position (as conjunction) of a body in the solar system with respect to the sun.

Aspects and Orbs

You are looking for any aspects between the lunation chart planets and the natal chart planets. Very tight orbs are used. No more than 3 degrees with a new moon and full moon, and only 1 degree for the quarter moons. While you are learning how to use lunations, stick with the main aspects (conjunction, square, trine, and opposition). With these, you'll more quickly grasp how this forecasting technique works and won't be haphazardly assigning blame to some ultra-minor aspect when it isn't really even involved.

In the sample bi-wheel chart, you'll see that the outer wheel is a quarter-moon lunation with Mars at 14 Taurus and it is in square (90 degrees) to the lunation Neptune. Right away, we are dealing with some sort of deceptive (Neptune) action (Mars) and we haven't even begun to compare it to the natal chart yet.

Next, we look to the natal chart (inner wheel) and see that indeed, the lunation Mars is also in square to the natal Venus. The orb is within minutes, well within the 1 degree orb limitation for a quarter-moon chart. Mars also looks to be in square to the natal Sun, but the orb is too large for a quarter-moon so we will ignore it for this example.

Now we want to determine where this deceptive action is going to come from and what it is going to involve.

We look now to what Venus rules in the natal chart and what house it is in. It sits in the 11th of friends and rules the 2nd of money and the 7th of partners/spouses.

It seems that either a friend, partner, or spouse is likely to deceive you about something involving money and you won't be too happy about it.

So what do we know so far? First of all, we know that within one week of the date of the lunation, there's going to be a problem with money, but is there a way to know more closely what day? The answer is YES. Many astrologers who do forecasting (whether with or without the lunations) have depended on when aspects are exact as the day that the event will take place. This lunation forecasting system, however, looks to the Moon as a trigger for setting things into motion.

Timing - The Moon As Trigger

We are going to watch the movement of the Moon to help us determine exactly what day that Mars -- Venus square will come to fruition. To do this, we have to use the concept of midpoints.

The midpoint of an aspect is a point halfway from one planet to another. In our example chart, natal Venus is at 14 Aquarius and lunation Mars is at 14 Taurus. This is a 90 degree aspect, so the midpoint will be 45 degrees (half of 90) from 14 Aquarius. A simple way to calculate this in your head is to add 45 to 14 (14 Aquarius + 45 = 59) then subtract whole signs (59 - 30 degrees of Aquarius = 29 Pisces). So the midpoint is 29 Pisces.

[Just to double check our math, let's move in the other direction and add 45 to 29 Pisces then deduct as many whole signs as we can. What is left over should be where Mars is. (29 Pisces + 45 = 74 -30(Pisces) -30(Aries) = 14 (Taurus)]

Once we've identified the midpoint, we now can extend it across the chart to find all our trigger points. See diagram 5. Each end of the dark lines represents a what can be called a trigger point. So for our example, 29 Pisces is the midpoint, 29 Virgo (opposite the mp) is another trigger point, 29 Gemini (which is a square to the midpoint) is a trigger point, and 29 Sagittarius (another square to the midpoint) is yet another trigger point.

The reason we identify so many trigger points is that in the space of one week (the period for which our example quarter-moon lunation is in effect) the Moon can only travel approximately 90 degrees (three signs). It would never go completely around the chart, for instance, to reach the actual midpoint if it were more than 90 degrees away in the lunation chart. So we look to when the Moon will make contact with one of the four trigger points. It is that day that we will likely see the outcome of the aspect. Using your bi-wheel, with the natal chart on the inside and lunation chart on the outside, find the transiting Moon.

The trigger point is usually going to be the midpoint between the transiting planet and the natal planet and when the Moon reaches that midpoint, boom! the aspect is set off. At times the Moon cannot reach the midpoint position because it is too far away and won't travel far enough in the time span allowed for that particular lunation - let's say the one week for the quarter moon. In this case, the midpoint has sensitive points at the opposition point, and the square point. When the Moon can reach one of those, it can trigger events. Our example diagram has the Moon very near one of those auxiliary midpoints suggesting that the event could be triggered off shortly before the lunation actually takes place or alternatively, when the Moon reaches the next trigger point. (#2)

The most important part of this technique is determining those trigger points and watching the Moon's travel. Had this been a New Moon, which is in effect for four weeks, the travel of the Moon would allow it to contact all four trigger points and we'd see the effects repeated four times during the month (roughly the same day each week). Also, since a New Moon covers such a long period of time, the effects would be minor, but effects nonetheless. (Keep in mind that we are talking about very simple aspects. If you have some heavy stuff in your chart involving many planets, then the effects would naturally be greater.)

Getting setup:

  1. use a well-timed natal chart
  2. create a chart for any of the lunar phases.
  3. erect a bi-wheel or pencil in the transiting phase planets around the natal chart.
  4. compare lunar phase planets to natal planets according to the recommended orbs
  5. noting the planets being aspected, figure the timing of the Moon to trigger the aspects.

  RULERSHIPS

Aries - Mars
Taurus - Venus
Gemini - Mercury
Cancer - Moon
Leo - Sun
Virgo - Mercury
Libra - Venus
Scorpio - Pluto or Mars
Sagittarius - Jupiter
Capricorn - Saturn
Aquarius - Uranus
Pisces - Neptune

House Rulerships

A chart consists of 12 houses, each one ruled by the planet that rules the zodiac sign on the cusp of each house. In other words, if the 1st house has Capricorn on the cusp, then the house ruler would be Saturn because Saturn rules Capricorn. Using these house rulerships, we can get more specific about what area of your life will be affected by the lunation in question.

Let's say you want to know the next time you are prone to getting hurt. You'd look for a Mars transit that would aspect your 1st house ruler. That could mean an injury is forthcoming. (Mars is associated with sharp things, cuts, knives, pain)

So you'd look to the nearest lunation and see if Mars will be within the allowable orb for that type of lunation. If it is, then the Moon reaching the trigger point will be when it happens. If it isn't, then you'll have some minor event that you won't pay much attention to. Another example, look at Venus aspects to your 1st house ruler. A tight orb aspect will often times result in either the flu or possibly a sore throat.

Building the Forecast Story

Once you locate the active aspects that are within orb for the type of lunation you are working with, you begin to construct a story from the symbolism of the type of aspect, the planets involved, the houses ruled in the natal chart, and the house the natal planets are in.

Here is some sample planetary sybolism to get you started:

Mercury - mail, communications, transportation, siblings, neighbors
Venus - money, food, personal interaction
Mars - action, anger, injury, new things, energy
Jupiter - good fortune, expansiveness, excess
Saturn - delay, restriction, responsibility
Uranus - unexpected, chaos, innovation
Neptune - deception, confusion, creativity, sleepiness
Pluto - major change, decay

Others using this system have reported good results by watching where the transiting Moon lands in the natal chart. The focus for that month (in a new moon phase) could be indicated by the natal house in which it occurs. An example would be if the Moon falls in the first house, there would be a focus on the physical body and self interests for the month.

Another example: Let's say that transiting Mars in a quarter Moon chart will exactly square your natal Mars, and the orb is the required 1 degree. Then we would expect that not only would you find yourself feeling quite angry over something, but we could also say that it would involve the house that your Mars rules.

Transiting Venus trine your 1st house ruler could have you improving your appearance or being in the company of another person. In a soft aspect, the person would make you feel happy; if it is a hard aspect, the visit would be uncomfortable in some way. If the transiting Venus squares the ruler of your 11th house, those plans you made with friends won't work out.

If you want to know when the next time you will have a cold, just watch for a quarter moon where the Moon itself is Square or is opposite your Sun. That's usually going to bring one of those really nasty colds.

If you were wondering when your Income Tax refund was going to arrive, you could watch for a lunation where Mercury favorably aspects your 2nd house ruler. Mercury would represent the mail, and the 2nd house ruler governs your money. Trines have midpoints, too, so that point will still be the trigger.

If you have a lunation where the Moon is aspecting one of your natal planets, then that means whatever your natal planet rules will be highlighted for that period of time.

The technique I am describing works mainly for the faster moving planets. Many astrologers are taught to work with a list of transiting planets to their natal planets without ever using the transiting or lunation Moon. The focus of the lesson would have to do with understanding how the outer planets affect their lives. Forecasting with lunations and the inner planets offers a world of information not found any other way.

When you are dealing with transits from the heavies (ie. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto), you would be better off looking at the eclipses for the year -- both Solar and Lunar.

[Please note that when drawing up an eclipse chart, you should use the time of the eclipse NOT the time of the lunation. They oftentimes differ by several minutes.]

A 5 to 10 degree orb is allowable for eclipses. The timing here would be 1 year influence for the Solar and 6 months for the Lunar. In the case of using eclipses, the trigger changes over to the Sun. Because you are dealing with greater periods of time, watching the Moon won't work. In this case, the Sun comes to a trigger point and should be watched at the midpoint degree of the aspect.

If you have a difficult natal aspect, then whatever that aspect represents in your life will probably come to light. If it's a difficulty with your siblings, you'll find out in a big hurry. Look at the sample bi-wheel and observe that the lunation Venus is square to the natal Mercury, which happens to rule the 3rd house of siblings and/or neighbors. This suggests that relations (Venus) with your siblings and/or neighbors will not go smoothly at all, in fact there might be a surprise visit that is terribly inconvenient for you.

The full moon could have brought it on, but you must also look back to the eclipses to see if they were involved too. Sometimes, things coincide in such a way that it looks like one thing is the reason, but it's really because something at the higher level (eclipse) was being triggered off. If you watch these lunations very carefully, you will begin to be able to tell where events are coming from. You'll gain confidence in the timing mechanism and be able to say, no, that couldn't have come from this or that.

Aside from viewing the aspects with regard to house rulerships, we can also look at the aspects at their most fundamental meanings. For example:

Mars to Sun = Ego Anger, feeling slighted, put down, disrespected
Mars to Moon = Emotional Anger, feeling wounded emotionally
Mars to Venus = Contrary behavior
Mars to Mars = Anger, impatience, irrational behavior

This should be enough information to get you started on the road to forecasting by lunations. Once you see how reliable this method is for timing the outcome of an aspect, I think you'll continue using it for many years to come.
